Ten Under! Kyle Stanley, Spencer Levin shoot 62s at Farmers Insurance Open

LaJolla, CA, United States (AHN Sports) – The first round at the Farmers Insurance Open Thursday at Torrey Pines was a tale of two golf courses.
First, there is the beast, the South course, the one that has hosted the U.S. Open. Then there is the little brother, the pushover, the North course. And it was on that North course where the fireworks took place during the first day of play.
Spencer Levin and Kyle Stanley took apart the North course and shot 10-under par 62s. Levin had 10 birdies, seven of them were on the back nine where he shot 29 coming home. “I just kept trying to hit every shot as good as I could and I just had a good rhythm going,” Levin said. “My mind was pretty clear and it just worked out good.”
Ten under was the most under par he’s managed in a round during his career. He shot 62 in Las Vegas last season but that was nine-under.
Stanley tied him with two spectacular shots on his final hole of the day, the par five 18th. He hit a 380-yard drive then hit an eight-iron from 173 yards to three feet and made the eagle putt to post his 62. “There were just a lot of birdie opportunities out there so I knew there was a good score. Maybe not 10 (under) but I’ll take it.”
The lead duo was a shot in front of FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas. Haas shot 63 and he turned nine-under despite a double-bogey on his card. He had 11 birdies on the day, more than either Levin or Stanley. “I was just hoping to play well,” Haas recalled. “I knew on this course it’s somewhat more gettable than the South.”
That was the overall theme of the day. Vijay Singh, Rod Pampling, Josh Teater and John Huh all shot 64s on the North course.
The best round on the tough South course belonged to Marc Turnesa. He shot a six-under par 66 and could likely end up as the 36-hole leader if he plays as well on the North course as he did on the South.
With good scores the order of the day, one big name struggled mightily. Phil Mickelson had a horrible outing and finished with a 77. His five-over par effort on the South course left him tied for 147th and in danger of missing the 36-hole cut.
Dustin Johnson, who withdrew from last week’s Humana Challenge, was back in shape and responded with a six-under par 66 on the North course.
J.B. Holmes came back for his first event since undergoing brain surgery last year and he finished with a 76 on the South course.
The cut on Friday could come at two or three-under par.
